History

Historical timeline of the Gymnase de Beaulieu

1837

Creation of a middle-level commercial school in Lausanne, marking the beginnings of commercial education in the Canton of Vaud and the foundations of the future Gymnase de Beaulieu.

1869
Ancien bâtiment de l’École supérieure de commerce de Carton-de-Vaud ouverte en 1869 avant l’installation à Beaulieu

Opening of the Canton-de-Vaud Higher School of Commerce as the commercial branch of the Cantonal School of Industry. At the time, it included industrial, commercial, and agricultural sections. Did you know? Before Beaulieu, the School of Commerce was located at No. 7 Chauderon.

1892

Replacement of the Cantonal Industrial School by four distinct schools under a single management. The commercial section officially becomes a School of Commerce.

1901

Creation of the commercial section, strengthening the role of the Gymnase de Beaulieu in commercial education (maturité commerciale) in Switzerland.

1908

A new law officially names the institution the Lausanne Higher School of Commerce, Administration, and Railways. Did you know? There used to be a room named "CFF" (now Room 412). Here is a class photo from the year 1907.

1912

The association is founded under the name "Association of Former Administration Students and Graduates of the Lausanne School of Commerce, Administration, and Railways."

1913 -1915

Construction of the current school, south of the Beaulieu College. Did you know? Charles Thévenaz was the architect of the School of Commerce. He can be seen in the photo with his son Charles-François, the future architect of the Pontaise Olympic Stadium.

1915

Inauguration ceremony of the new building in Maupas.

1917

Opening of the "Commercial Baccalaureate" courses.

1919
Jubilé de l’École supérieure de commerce à Lausanne en 1919 avec une conférence des maîtres réunissant enseignants et élèves

Jubilee of the Higher School of Commerce. The "Teachers' Conference" room featuring about fifty of them, many sporting impressive facial hair, and only three female teachers. Although female students were admitted as early as 1906, boys and girls would continue to study separately for a very long time.

1936

Diplomas and certificates of commercial maturity are recognized as equivalent to the Federal Certificate of Competence awarded after the final apprenticeship exam for commercial professions. Did you know? At least six different models of typewriters were used for typing courses. Typing, microscopy, and chemistry classrooms in images.

1951 – 1953

Construction of sports facilities.

1969
1969

Celebration of the school's centenary.

1972

The Gymnase de Beaulieu officially becomes a school recognized by the Department of Public Instruction of the Canton of Vaud.

1974

The association is renamed the "Association of Former Administration Students and Graduates of the Canton of Vaud Higher School of Commerce."

1991

Introduction of the Federal Economic Baccalaureate in the canton. The Lausanne Higher School of Commerce becomes the CESS de Beaulieu. Type C and D Baccalaureates make their return.

1992

Opening of a scientific annex to the north of the building, made necessary by the requirements of the Federal Baccalaureate curricula.

1994

125th Anniversary of the school.

1996

The new facilities of CESS Beaulieu and the renovated original building are inaugurated.

1997

CESS Beaulieu becomes the Gymnase de Beaulieu, marking a new stage in the evolution of the institution and upper secondary education in Lausanne.

1999

Opening of the "Socio-Pedagogical Baccalaureate."

2003

Renovated and expanded sports facilities.

2006

The Fréminet annex is transformed, increasing its student enrollment capacity.

2019

The association is renamed the Association of Graduated Students of the Gymnase de Beaulieu.
